Beacon Patient Family Advisory Council
The Beacon PFAC works in partnership with the Children’s Mercy staff members to advocate on behalf of Beacon Program and Clinic families for the best quality of care. The council, established in 2018, serves as a resource for parents or guardians to provide input on policies and procedures, enhance communication, and expand education for patients and families in both inpatient and outpatient settings. The PFAC members include 13 parent/family members and 8 Beacon Clinic staff.
Past accomplishments

Improved conditions in hospital parking lots and garages to accommodate oversized vans and vehicles with handicap tags.

Created parking ticket messaging to raise awareness of handicap spaces.

Participated on national Patient Experience Collaborative webinar parent panel.

Developed the patient experience roadmap.

Optimized clinic workflow from the patient perspective to reduce redundancy and ensure value-based care team interaction.

Ensured effective communication about patient experience (surveys), multiple children, appointment reminders, and medical information with multi-tiered approach scaling the project and efforts from Beacon, to Specialty Clinics, to Hospital.

Parents Offering Parent Support (POPS)
Children's Mercy offers a program called Parents Offering Parent Support (POPS), a network of trained parent volunteers who mentor other parents through the challenges of their child's health condition.
