Presentations

The event will feature four inspiring presentations covering a variety of lean improvements

  • Early Identification of Patients at High Risk for CLABSI
4 Henson Hall launched a pilot program with the goal of reducing CLABSI rates by 10% by the end of 2024. By collaborating across disciplines, we improved our identification of high-risk patients and standardized our interventions. In just 12 weeks, we achieved a 50% reduction in CLABSIs, a tremendous improvement in the quality of our patient care. This proactive approach underscores the power of staff engagement and continuous improvement.

  • Cardiac Procedural Supply: One Bite at a Time
In the Cardiac Procedural Areas, we faced supply shortages that led to frustration and hindered patient care. Our multidisciplinary team tackled this large project by breaking it down into bite-sized pieces, making it manageable. Using Lean tools like process maps and driver diagrams, we identified over 134 improvement opportunities. By standardizing processes and implementing job aids and Kanban cards, we reduced waste and improved supply management. This resulted in cost savings, increased staff satisfaction, and enhanced patient care. Join us to learn how small, incremental changes can lead to significant improvements in healthcare supply chains.

  • PaCT Pause to the Rescue!
Facing rising patient workloads and staff burnout, the Palliative Care Team (PaCT) revamped our palliative care delivery model. Using Lean tools like A3 and Fishbone diagrams, we identified inefficiencies and implemented the "PaCT Pause" to manage patient care more sustainably. This led to a significant reduction in daily census and improved staff well-being. Join us to learn how our first A3 project transformed our approach, ensuring high-quality care while reducing burnout and enhancing professional development opportunities.

  • Creating Healing Spaces: The Design Journey of our Partial Hospitalization Program
As part of the Illuminate program, Children's Mercy is launching a partial hospitalization program to address the youth mental health crisis. Using integrated facility design (IFD), we meticulously planned the new physical space and workflows simultaneously. Using detailed process maps, bubble diagrams, and full scale mock-ups, we ensured every detail supports optimal care. Discover how we used Lean tools and interdisciplinary collaboration to create a healing environment and transform patient care from day one.
  • Community Generosity in Action: Streamlining Donations for a Magical Impact at Children's Mercy
Toys, clothing, toiletries, and other items are generously donated by the community to Children's Mercy. Learn how a cross-functional team created efficient processes to receive, process, and distribute these donated items throughout the enterprise - and deliver a magical experience to even more patients and families.

  • Sparkling Success: Standardizing the STAT clean process to improve patient throughput
Learn how our Environmental Services and Nursing teams collaborated in a workshop to clearly define STAT cleans & improve response times. The team utilized standard work and processes for how to remove common barriers and cover staffing gaps during high volume of room turnovers. The team will share their awesome job of utilizing the Daily Management System to sustain and continually improve this process!

  • Transparent Triumph: Waiting Innovation with Family-Facing Screens at Children's Mercy Kansas
Learn how Patient Access, Lab and Radiology reduced wait times, increased transparency, and improved patient satisfaction by working together to design and trial multiple process improvements at Children's Mercy Kansas.

  • From Wait to Wow: Improving GI Procedure Scheduling for our Patients and Families
In August 2023, only 30% of our patients reported that they had gotten a gastrointestinal (GI) procedure appointment as soon as they wanted. Learn how a large GI Division/Perioperative Services/Informatics team rapidly implemented process improvements to greatly increase patient satisfaction and reduce lead time from clinic visit to procedure.

  • Fast Lane to Care: Drive-Through Insights Fueling Efficient Nurse-Led Visits
Learn how operations that were established during Covid drive-through clinics were creatively re-imagined to improve patient flow, decrease length of stay, and reduce strain on limited staff resources in the Urgent Care setting.
