Allergy and Immunology
Allergy and Immunology
The Children’s Mercy Allergy and Immunology department connects families with expert health care providers who can diagnose and treat all types of allergy and immunology conditions.
Our physicians are board-certified allergists with additional certification or training in pediatrics. That means your child will receive allergy care from a team of people who understand how allergies and conditions impact kids and provide care in an environment designed for pediatric care.
Nurse practitioners, social workers, asthma care coordinators, environmental health specialists, and researchers are all part of our family-centered approach to allergy, asthma and immunology care.
Clinical Services
We care for children and teens with asthma, seasonal allergies, eczema, food allergies, hives/swelling, and other allergic conditions.
We bring together a team of experts to evaluate all the factors that might be influencing your child’s asthma and address them with medications and lifestyle changes. This multidisciplinary clinic provides care for children with severe, poorly controlled asthma who are at high risk for increased resource utilization and morbidity/mortality.
Visit our asthma resource center to find important information on how to recognize symptoms, avoid common triggers, and manage asthma in kids of all ages.
We partner with our Gastroenterology team to offer specialized care for kids with EoE. This inflammatory disease of the esophagus is caused by a specific type of food allergy, and many children who have EoE have a history of other allergic disorders as well.
The Children's Mercy Food Allergy Center is designated as a national Center of Excellence by Food Allergy and Research Education (FARE). We are dedicated to advancing research, educating families and elevating the quality of care for kids with food allergies.
The Healthy Home Program is a partnership between Children’s Mercy staff, your health care provider, and you to help identify and reduce environmental exposures that may cause or worsen respiratory health problems within your home.
Our immunology team helps families manage care for kids with complex immunodeficiency conditions.
The Multidisciplinary Food Allergy Clinic serves children who are diagnosed with two or more major food allergies or those with poor growth due to a food allergy.
Comprehensive care for kids with 22q11.2 Deletion or Duplication Syndromes.
Families who live a long distance from a Children’s Mercy location can benefit from telemedicine, a way to visit with a health care provider through secure, digital video transmissions.

Stories
Peanut allergy: Jayden's story
Jayden Johnson had his first life-threatening allergic reaction to peanut at just 13 months old. From then on, avoiding any products containing peanut became a full-time job for his family. Then Jayden signed up to take part in a clinical trial for a new treatment to potentially help him build up a tolerance to peanut. The treatment worked. He’s developed a tolerance to peanut, and with it a new-found freedom to do things he’d once only dreamed of.
Advancing care for kids with allergies and immunology disorders through research
Many of our health care providers are active in national organizations such as the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology, the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology and the American Academy of Pediatrics. They collaborate with other thought leaders to participate in advancing our understanding of allergic conditions through innovative research.
Food allergies, including allergies to peanuts is a large concern for parents. We are actively researching how oral immunotherapy can help manage these allergies to improve the experience kids have in the future. Current clinical research initiatives include oral immunotherapy (OIT) for peanut and other food allergies.
