Integrated Pediatric Psychology Services
Psychology services for children with acute or chronic conditions
Clinical psychologists provide pediatric psychology services to children and adolescents who are newly diagnosed or have chronic medical conditions at Children’s Mercy. We care for children in our hospitals and clinics who have conditions like cancer, diabetes, traumatic injuries, solid organ transplant, or chronic pain conditions.
The pediatric psychology team also provides consultation services to children and adolescents who are currently in the hospital. Pediatric psychologists assess youth for mental or behavioral health concerns and provide treatment and support as needed. They work closely with the medical team caring for your child.

- Problems with health behaviors (e.g., sleep, eating, physical activity).

Services we offer
The Pediatric Psychology Team provides outpatient psychology services in multiple settings:
- Developmental and Behavioral Health Clinic.
- Medical specialty and multidisciplinary clinics.
- Center for Children’s Healthy Lifestyles & Nutrition.
- Pediatric Primary Care Clinics.
- Telehealth (online appointments).
- Inpatients at Children's Mercy and Children's Mercy Hospital Kansas.
Pediatric psychology services are provided at Children’s Mercy in both outpatient and inpatient settings. Our pediatric psychologists consult with children, families, and medical teams as needed. We often serve as liaisons between medical providers and families to enhance communication and understanding.
Our services include:
- Behavioral health interventions to promote adjustment to a new medical condition, positive coping and quality of life.
- Interventions to encourage positive health behaviors such as appropriate nutrition, physical activity, good sleep habits and regular participation in important life activities (e.g., school, social activities).
- Working with children, caregivers, and the medical team to promote adherence to medical treatment plans, including medications, nutrition, exercise and other prescribed therapies.
- Interventions to prevent or manage pain during treatment or procedures and therapy to manage chronic pain.
What to expect
Pediatric psychologists work closely with our physicians and medical teams to identify children and adolescents who may benefit from behavioral health support. The pediatric psychologist will meet with you and your child to learn more about your child’s unique experience and needs. Together, we will make a plan for treatment and support.
In some cases, our pediatric psychologists are already an embedded part of the Children’s Mercy team that is caring for your child and have specialized experience with your child’s health condition.
