What to expect at a feeding evaluation

During a feeding evaluation, the speech pathologist will ask about concerns you have regarding the child’s feeding and swallowing. They will gather information regarding medical, developmental, and feeding history.  

During the evaluation, the speech pathologist will try strategies and techniques to help increase feeding/swallowing skills. They will review the results and recommendations with you on the day of the appointment. They may recommend feeding therapy, if appropriate.  

During the evaluation, the speech pathologist will observe and examine the following: 

• Assess the oral structures and oral motor skills used with feeding and swallowing. 
• Assess for any signs that food or liquid is going into the airway.  
• Observe your child’s position, behavior, and oral movements that might affect their ability to eat and drink.
   

Feeding therapy

Feeding therapy is provided by a licensed speech pathologist. During a therapy session, the speech pathologist will work directly with your child and provide suggestions and support for your family. The speech pathologist will try strategies and techniques to help increase feeding/swallowing skills.
