ACL Return to Sport Testing
When student-athletes near completion of rehabilitation following an ACL injury, they will undergo evidence-based tests with their sports physical therapist to determine if they are ready to gradually return to their sport.
What to expect during the ACL return-to-sport testing
At approximately 12 weeks:
- Isokinetic testing scores >70% for the affected quads and hamstrings compared to the unaffected (Tested at 90, 180, and 300 degrees per second)
- Y-balance test
- Lateral step-down test
At approximately 24 weeks:
- Isokinetic testing with 66% or greater HS/quad ratio
- > 90% for the affected quads and hamstrings compared to the unaffected
- Tested at 90, 180, and 300 degrees per second
- Y-balance test
- 5-0-5 with less than .5 second difference right vs. left
- Subjective questionnaires completed to assess mental readiness
- 90% or greater on all jump testing
- Single-leg hop for distance
- Single-leg, triple hop for distance
- Single-leg, triple-crossover hop for distance
- Timed single-leg hop for 30 feet
If these criteria are met around 24 weeks postoperatively, your surgeon may recommend beginning transition back to sport, by working on agility, endurance and sport-specific activities.
