Academic Curriculum

Curriculum Overview

Training in pediatric congenital cardiac surgery spans 1 year and is inclusive of surgical/outpatient clinical rotations. Fellows will attain increasing responsibility and autonomy in surgery and clinical rotations as they demonstrate the ability to competently perform all essential medical, diagnostic and surgical procedures. 

Didactic Curriculum

Clinical exposure and mentorship are supplemented by a multitude of didactic educational offerings. Fellows will participate in preoperative surgical case planning conferences, attend monthly Core Curriculum conferences focused on topics such as clinical teaching tools, mentorship, and ethics.  A Pediatric Cardiology Core Curriculum conference will highlight the core knowledge base in our field. Fellows will also participate in Heart Center clinical conferences such as weekly cardiac catheterization and cardiovascular surgery conferences.

Academic Progress

Fellows receive regular feedback to ensure educational needs are being met. Monthly evaluations by faculty, staff, and others will be available for secure online review through a Children's Mercy web resource. Fellow meets formally with the program director at least twice annually to review rotation evaluations, procedural log books, and any other issues pertinent to successful completion of the fellowship curriculum.
