Clinical Curriculum
Pediatric Cardiology Fellowship
Our physicians integrate education for fellows, residents, medical and nursing students into all aspects of patient care. Residency programs thrive in pediatrics, medicine-pediatrics and pediatric neurology, with fellowship training programs in 24 subspecialties.
Training in pediatric cardiology spans 36 months with 20 months of clinical rotations. Fellows will attain increasing responsibility and autonomy in clinical rotations. Clinical responsibilities increase appropriate to the level of acquired expertise during the second and third year of fellowship.
Curriculum overview
Year 1
Fellows will spend time in all the areas of cardiology to get the appropriate knowledge base to build on. Fellows will spend two days per month in Cardiology Clinic providing outpatient care under the supervision of a cardiologist mentor. Fellows will also begin a clinical research project or develop a research focus with a mentor.
Year 2
The trainee will advance their clinical knowledge with experience in the Cardiac Intensive Care, Echocardiography and Non-invasive Imaging, Cardiac Catheterization, and the Electrophysiology service. Time will also be devoted to research experience and electives tailored to the fellow's clinical and research interests.
Year 3
Fellows will focus on further development of clinical, academic, and research skills. Fellows will directly supervise the care team on daily inpatient rounds, communicate care plans with patients and families, provide clinical teaching for house staff and medical students, and provide cardiology consultation for inpatients managed by other care teams. Fellows will be exposed to advanced imaging modalities and will take on more responsibility in the planning of diagnostic and interventional procedures in the cardiac catheterization laboratory.
