Pediatric Nephrology Fellowship
The Children’s Mercy Pediatric Nephrology Fellowship is one of the oldest training programs, with continual accreditation by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) since 1991. At the completion of our three-year program, fellows are eligible to sit for the Sub-Board in Pediatric Nephrology through the American Board of Pediatrics. A total of one fellow is accepted per year, with a total number of 3 fellowship positions available.
Fellows benefit from our dynamic and nationally-renowned learning environment of Children’s Mercy Kansas City. The Division of Pediatric Nephrology provides compassionate, high-quality care to children and tends with kidney and urinary tract disorders. Our division is routinely recognized as one of the top 10 nephrology programs in the nation by U.S. News and World Report. We have a dedicated pediatric dialysis centers in the country and are one of the few who offer in-center peritoneal dialysis, as well as nocturnal home hemodialysis programs to children.
Particular highlights of our fellowship include:
- Robust kidney transplant program, with an average of 15-20 new kidney transplants per year and Immunohistochemistry elective rotation during the second year at the Midwest Transplant Network.
- Opportunities to refine procedural skills abound, with > 100 kidney biopsies performed per year.
- Diverse array of outpatient clinics including General Nephrology, Bone and Mineral Disorders Clinic, Enuresis and Voiding Dysfunction, Hypertension, Genetic Nephrology, and Fetal Health clinics.
- Formal curriculum offered in Grant-Writing (year one) and Quality Improvement Science (year two).
- Fellows are encouraged (although not required) to pursue higher education opportunities including through the University of Missouri Kansas City, with Certificate and Masters’ level programs in Bioinformatics, Health Professions Education, and Bioethics.

Inside Pediatrics: Jack's story
