Pediatric Otolaryngology Fellowship

Our ENT division

Pediatric otolaryngology at Children's Mercy and the University of Kansas continues to grow. There are currently 11 pediatric otolaryngology faculty who are augmented by two neurotologists. Children's Mercy is a regional 367-bed tertiary referral center and Level I Pediatric Trauma Center which includes 41 Pediatric ICU and 87 Neonatal ICU beds. With 33 divisions and more than 400 pediatric faculty members, we provide one of the most stimulating academic and clinical environments in the country.

The fellow will see patients in their own weekly outpatient clinic with staff supervision and fill their own fellow operating room block. The ENT fellow also serves are the team leader for the busy inpatient service. They also have the opportunity to complete multiple research projects that will be submitted for national presentation and publication with help from ENT designated research staff.

Your clinical experience

Inpatient

The fellow will be the team leader for the inpatient service. The patients will consist of both primary ENT patients and consults on the inpatient wards, ER, NICU and PICU. The team consists of faculty, otolaryngology residents from KUMC, mid-level practitioners and medical students.

The fellow's operating experience is designed to allow them graduated responsibility for complex and unusual cases. As the year progresses, the fellow will be expected to transition to the teaching role as they work with the residents. Their primary focus is to participate in operative cases on complex patients and unique pathology. These include pediatric patients with difficult airways; sinus pathology; otologic processes; benign and malignant head and neck tumors; palate work; and caring for patients with complex medical conditions.
